Mulching
I provide mulching services across Newquay, Truro, St Austell, and the wider Cornwall area. A proper mulch application tidies up your beds, suppresses weeds, retains moisture, and protects plant roots through Cornwall's milder but wetter winters. I supply quality bark mulch or composted material at market rate and handle the full job from bed prep through to a clean, even finish.

A tidy bed refresh with a clean finish
Mulching is one of the simplest upgrades you can make to a garden, but it only works well when the preparation is done properly first. I clear weeds, tidy the bed edges, and make sure the soil surface is in good condition before laying anything down. In Cornwall's mild, damp climate, skipping this step just means weeds push straight through the mulch within a few weeks. I take the time to do it right so the result actually lasts. Once the beds are prepped, I apply mulch to an even depth for a consistent, tidy finish that makes the whole border look intentional.
Before any mulch goes down, I clear existing debris, pull weeds, and tidy the bed surface. Cornwall's year-round growing season means there is usually something sprouting, so thorough prep is essential. A clean bed gives the mulch the best chance of doing its job properly.
Weeding before mulching is not optional if you want results that last. I remove weeds by hand and clear root systems where possible, particularly persistent growers like bindweed and couch grass that thrive in Cornwall's damp conditions. This gives you a much longer period before anything pushes back through.
A crisp, defined edge between lawn and bed makes the mulch look deliberate and contained. I cut fresh edges with a half-moon edger so the border has a clean line. This small detail makes a surprisingly big difference to how polished the finished job looks.
I spread mulch to an even depth across the bed, typically 5 to 8 centimetres depending on the material and the condition of the soil underneath. I supply either bark mulch for a decorative finish or composted material where the soil needs conditioning. Both are charged at market rate and itemised clearly in your quote.
Timing matters with mulching. Late autumn and early spring are the best windows in Cornwall. Autumn mulching locks in warmth and moisture before winter, while spring application suppresses weed germination as temperatures rise. I will advise on the ideal timing for your garden based on what you are growing and where you are in the county.
Any waste from bed preparation, including old mulch, weeds, and debris, is cleared away and taken off-site. I am a licensed waste carrier, so disposal is handled properly and legally. Green waste removal is charged at £10 per dumpy bag.
Mulching is one of the best value-for-money improvements in any garden. It protects the soil from Cornwall's heavy winter rainfall, reduces the amount of weeding you need to do, and keeps moisture in during drier spells. Combined with clean edging, it gives beds a polished, finished look that lasts for months. I supply the material at market rate and always include it as a separate line in the quote so you can see exactly what you are paying for.
