Pampas Grass Removed - Gravel Garden Added
A full garden transformation in Newquay, Cornwall. Pampas grass removed, ground prepared, weed membrane installed, and a clean gravel finish with a new patio area.

The story, quickly
This Newquay garden had been taken over by a large pampas grass that dominated the whole space. It was one of those situations where a single plant had been left to do its own thing for too long, and everything around it had suffered. The borders were overgrown, the ground beneath was a mess, and the homeowner could not really use any of the garden. They wanted the pampas gone and something low-maintenance in its place, with a proper area for sitting outside.
Removing established pampas grass is not a five-minute job. The root systems are dense and deep, and in the Cornish climate where growth is vigorous, a mature clump can be substantial. I cut the foliage back first, then dug out the root ball and cleared the surrounding vegetation. All of the green waste was taken away and disposed of through my licensed waste carrier setup at £10 per dumpy bag. There was a fair amount to shift on this one.
With the site cleared, I levelled the ground across the full area and laid heavy-duty weed membrane. The membrane is critical for any gravel garden that is going to last, particularly in Cornwall where mild, damp winters encourage growth year-round. I pinned everything down properly at joins and edges, then spread decorative gravel over the top for a clean, even surface.
The patio element of this project made a real difference to how the homeowner could use the garden. I prepared a solid base and laid paving slabs to create a dedicated seating area. Having a proper hard surface for a table and chairs turned what had been an unusable space into somewhere they could actually sit and enjoy. The patio connects neatly to the gravel, with clean edging separating the two surfaces.
The budget for a gravel garden with patio installation in Cornwall typically falls in the £1,500 to £2,500 range, depending on the size of the patio, the amount of clearance needed, and the materials chosen. This project was completed over a few days. The difference between before and after was dramatic. From a garden dominated by one out-of-control plant to a clean, practical, modern outdoor space.
