Project overview

The story, quickly

This front garden in Newquay had been left for over a year. The homeowner told me they dreaded coming home because the overgrowth made the whole property look neglected. Weeds had pushed through every gap, old planting had gone leggy, and the space was doing nothing useful. They wanted something that looked decent from the street without needing constant attention. That is exactly what a gravel garden delivers, and it suited this property well.

I spent the first day clearing everything back. That meant pulling out a year's worth of weed growth, removing tired shrubs that had no real future, and cutting back anything encroaching from the boundaries. The Cornish climate around Newquay keeps things growing fast, so there was a good volume of green waste to deal with. All of it was removed and disposed of properly through my licensed waste carrier setup, charged at £10 per dumpy bag.

Once the ground was clear, I levelled the area and laid a heavy-duty weed membrane across the full surface. Getting this step right is what makes the difference between a gravel garden that stays clean and one that turns into a weeding job within six months. I pinned the membrane properly at the edges and overlaps, then spread a consistent layer of decorative gravel over the top. The gravel was chosen to complement the property's exterior and the surrounding streetscape.

The whole project took three days from start to finish. Day one was clearance. Day two was ground preparation and membrane. Day three was gravel, edging, and a final tidy. For a job of this size and scope in Cornwall, the budget typically falls between £1,500 and £2,500 depending on access, the amount of waste, and the type of gravel chosen. This one came in within that range.

The homeowner was genuinely chuffed with the result. They mentioned that neighbours had been stopping to comment on how much better it looks. That kind of feedback is always good to hear. For a property in a residential street in Newquay, kerb appeal makes a real difference, and a clean gravel garden is one of the simplest ways to achieve it without signing up for regular mowing and weeding.
